The two wingless non-reproductive castes consist of the soldiers and workers. The soldiers defend the colony from outside attack, while the workers carry out all duties except defence and reproduction. For example, the workers feed the reproductives, larvae and soldiers, care for the eggs, and construct tunnels and shelter tubes. The soldier caste consists of sterile adults with large heads and pincher-like mouth parts. These soldiers make up 2-3 % of the total colony.
The subterranean termite is very closely associated with the soil, which is its main source of life-sustaining moisture. Termite food consists of cellulose obtained from wood and wood products. Decaying damp wood is preferred but termites are also able to feed on sound, dry lumber.
It is difficult to identify termites unless there is a reproductive swarm. Swarming termites do however resemble swarming ants. Some people call termites "white ants" but this is an incorrect term. Termites are often white but some are so clear you can see food in their gut. Their bodies are very soft.
Powder post beetles only do significant damage when multiple generations continually re-infest the same piece of wood. Also, powder post beetle damage is restricted to hardwoods, and since most structural framing is made of softwood lumber it is rarely attacked by these insects.
Termites eat away at wood in the home and use their own feces and dirt to patch up the holes they make. If you look carefully, you might find some evidence of this. If you have painted, wooden surfaces you might see what appears to be bubbling under the paint. This can be caused by termites eating the wood. After termites have finished swarming, many shed their wings, which you can find on the floor of your house.
Often shelter tubesconstructed of soil particles cemented together by excrement or secretions from the mouth are used to connect the outside soil to a building and for crossing a concrete or metallic portion in a structure. The presence of a shelter tube is generally the first physical evidence of a termite infestation.
Several species of powder post beetles are to be found in the U.S. and Canada. They vary in length from 1/16" to 3/8", but generally have flattened bodies, a prominent head and segmented antennae. True powder post beetles attack only hardwoods (particularly oak, hickory, ash, walnut and cherry) but other species of wood boring beetles attack both hardwoods and softwoods.
Pesky wood eating insects, termites can quickly destroy the framing of your home. Some areas have such a huge termite problem, termite inspections are a regular requirement in the sales contract of a home. One thing is for sure, if untreated, termites can cause pricey damage. If you are a homeowner, it is important for you to make termites a priority. The good news is that termite control is easy. This article looks at protecting your home from termites with termiticide, termite barriers, or bait stations.
Termites and white ants is soft-bodied social creature of the scientific order Isoptera. They damage your home at a steady rate. It is easy to distinguish these termites from ants by comparing the abdomen base of the two. In termites, abdomen broadly connects to the thorax while in ants there is a slender petiole (connection) connecting these segments. Additionally antennae of termites are threadlike or beadlike whereas antennae of ants are elbowed. As termites feed primarily on wood, it is necessary to have some basic termite information or else they may damage your home.
If you own a property made of wood then getting rid of termites is one of the top most priority. It is an important that most of the people faces, whether they own a house or not. Pest control takes advantages of this and thus at times charge unreasonable prices at times.
